Cruise insurance and the Schengen visa: what a visa plan covers
Does Schengen visa insurance cover a cruise? Not reliably. A visa plan satisfies the €30,000 medical and repatriation rule, but the policy wordings we read are written around countries, flights and land travel. Only SafetyWing and AURAS mention cruises or ships at all, and none of the plans cover cruise-specific risks like cancellation or missed ports.
A Schengen visa plan and a cruise policy are different products. If you need the visa, you need the first. If you are sailing, you may want the second as well. We compare visa plans, so this page shows where they stop.
What each policy says about ships
| Provider | What the wording says |
|---|---|
| Europ Assistance | Cover is valid in listed territorial limits (countries). Ships are not mentioned as a place of cover, so ask about events at sea. A ship ticket is accepted as proof of travel when claiming |
| Heymondo | Counts regular boat liners as transport for the travel-delay benefit. Excludes use of air or maritime craft not authorised for public passenger transport. Sold only to age 69 |
| SafetyWing | Evacuation can use air, sea and ground transport. Checked luggage lost on a flight or cruise is reimbursed after 10 days with an incident report from the cruise line. Sold only to age 69 |
| EKTA | No cruise provision found in the policy wording |
| AURAS | Lists "calm leisure and cruise" as an activity category in its sports appendix |
| AXA Schengen | Not verified: we have no AXA policy wording. Ask AXA in writing |

What a visa plan does not do
The Schengen requirement is about medical expenses and repatriation. Cruise travelers usually also care about cancellation before sailing, a missed embarkation, a missed port, cabin confinement and the cost of the ship's medical centre. None of the wordings we read include those as standard. If a cruise is the main spend of the trip, compare a dedicated cruise policy at the insurer.
Checks before you sail
- Ask the insurer in writing whether medical events on board, including in international waters, are inside the policy territory.
- Check the age limit: Heymondo and SafetyWing stop at 69-70, and cruise passengers skew older. See our over 70 and 80+ guide.
- Check how pre-existing conditions are handled, since cruise passengers often have them. See pre-existing conditions.
- If the cruise visits ports outside the Schengen area, check the policy's territory. See travel insurance for Europe.
- Keep tickets and the cruise line's incident reports, since some benefits depend on them.
