Schengen visa insurance for travelers over 70 and over 80

Quick answer

Can someone over 70 or 80 get Schengen visa insurance? Yes, but only two of the six providers we compare realistically work past 74: AXA Schengen and AURAS. Heymondo and SafetyWing stop at 69-70, Europ Assistance at 74, and EKTA's age override cuts its medical cover to $8,000 or less, below the €30,000 visa minimum.

Our guide for travelers over 65 covers the general picture. This page is for the harder case: the applicant is in their 70s or 80s, and the question is which insurer will sell a policy a consulate can accept.

Why EKTA drops out

EKTA's policy contains an override table that replaces the advertised limit once the insured is 60 or older: $9,000 with a 20% deductible at 65-70, $8,000 with 30% at 70-75, $7,000 with 40% at 75-80, and $6,000 with 50% at 80-85. Consulates require at least €30,000 of medical cover, so a certificate that pays out $8,000 does not meet the requirement even though EKTA will sell it. The full table is in our EKTA review.

What it costs

Model prices from our price estimator, one traveler aged 70 or over, in euros:

Europ Assistance (to 74)€42€153€400

Source: this site's RATES pricing model (index.html), 70+ age bucket · Verified 2026-10-14. AXA's live 75+ quote was €84.37 for 30 days, so treat the 70+ figures as approximations.

Past 70 the surcharges keep climbing. AXA's live quotes showed 1.2× the adult price for ages 65-74 and 1.35× for 75+. AURAS measured 1.3× at 71, 1.4× at 76, 1.5× at 81 and 1.6× at 86. The price gap between AURAS and AXA is real, but so are the differences in what you get.

AXA or AURAS?

AXA Schengen is the safer pick for most applicants over 75: it is an established European brand, with tiers of €30,000, €100,000 and €2,000,000 of medical cover, so you can buy well above the visa minimum for an older traveler. See the AXA review.

AURAS is much cheaper per day and sells to any age, but it is underwritten in Comoros, not by an EU-regulated insurer (same underwriter as EKTA), caps any single claim at $3,000 per occurrence, and excludes pre-existing conditions and many chronic-disease complications. For a healthy 72-year-old on a short trip it may be enough; for anyone with an active health condition, the claim cap matters more than the saving. See the AURAS review and AXA vs AURAS.

Pre-existing conditions

This is where older applicants are most often surprised. Standard Schengen policies cover sudden, unforeseen emergencies, not the management of a known condition. AURAS excludes anything that showed up in the previous 24 months except life-threatening emergencies. If the traveler takes regular medication or is awaiting a procedure, ask the insurer in writing how that condition is treated before paying.

Practical tips

  • Buy the policy before the visa appointment and print the certificate: consulates check dates, territory and the €30,000 minimum.
  • Make sure the certificate states the traveler's name exactly as in the passport and covers the whole stay.
  • If the family pays on the traveler's behalf, the name on the certificate still has to be the traveler's, not the payer's.
  • Check which age counts: AURAS applies age at the trip start date, Europ Assistance age at purchase.

Frequently asked questions

Can a 75- or 80-year-old get Schengen visa insurance?
Yes, but the choice is narrow. Of the six providers we compare, only AXA Schengen (no confirmed upper age limit) and AURAS (advertised up to age 100, with a surcharge) sell to travelers past 74. Europ Assistance stops at 74, Heymondo and SafetyWing at 69-70, and EKTA sells but its cover at that age falls below the €30,000 visa minimum.
Does EKTA work for a Schengen visa if the traveler is over 70?
Not reliably. EKTA applies an age override from 60: its policy caps medical cover at $8,000 for ages 70-75 and $6,000 for 80-85, far below the €30,000 minimum consulates require, so we do not recommend it for visa applications past 60.
How much more does insurance cost after 70?
Roughly 1.2 to 1.6 times the standard adult price at the insurers that still sell. AXA's live quotes showed 1.2x for 65-74 and 1.35x for 75+; AURAS steps from 1.2x at 66 to 1.3x at 71, 1.4x at 76, 1.5x at 81 and 1.6x at 86.
Are pre-existing conditions covered for older travelers?
Generally only as life-threatening emergencies. AURAS excludes anything that showed up in the previous 24 months and many chronic-disease complications. Ask the insurer in writing how your specific condition is treated before you buy.
Is €30,000 enough for someone over 80?
It meets the visa rule, but a hospital stay with intensive care or a medical flight home can exceed it. Where the traveler has real health risk, a higher tier is worth the extra cost; AXA's Essential tier is €100,000 and its Premium tier €2,000,000.
